Charles James: Beyond Fashion

Metropolitan Museum’s Anna Wintour Costume Center
from May 8 through August 10

The inaugural exhibition of the newly renovated Costume Institute will examine the career of the legendary twentieth-century Anglo-American couturier Charles James (1906–1978). Charles James: Beyond Fashion will explore James's design process, focusing on his use of sculptural, scientific, and mathematical approaches to construct revolutionary ball gowns and innovative tailoring that continue to influence designers today. Approximately seventy-five of James's most notable designs will be presented in two locations—the new Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch Gallery in the Anna Wintour Costume Center as well as special exhibition galleries on the Museum's first floor.
The first-floor special exhibition galleries will spotlight the glamour and resplendent architecture of James's ball gowns from the 1940s through 1950s. The Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch Gallery will provide the technology and flexibility to dramatize James's biography via archival pieces including sketches, pattern pieces, swatches, ephemera, and partially completed works from his last studio in New York City's Chelsea Hotel. Video animations in both exhibition locations will illustrate how he created dresses that sculpted and reconfigured the female form.
After designing in his native London, and then Paris, James arrived in New York City in 1940. Though he had no formal training, he is now regarded as one of the greatest designers in America to have worked in the tradition of the Haute Couture. His fascination with complex cut and seaming led to the creation of key design elements that he updated throughout his career.

Vogue Daily — Dries Van Noten Inspirations exhibition

Dries Van Noten: Inspirations
Musée des Arts Décoratifs
107 rue de Rivoli
1er
Paris
Until 31 August

Entitled simply “Dries Van Noten: Inspirations,” the exhibition at Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris is a unique and revelatory exploration of what makes a designer of the caliber of Dries Van Noten tick; the images, movies, artworks (historic and ultramodern), and clothing (antique and ethnic) that inspire, provoke, and stimulate his creativity. Dries is adamant that this is not intended as a retrospective, although it is certainly an opportunity to study his remarkable body of work through the decades, and explore the themes and threads that unite his timeless designs. These include his enduring passions for flowers, India, China, toreadors, dandies, punk, contemporary art, dance, and uniforms among many other themes.
The show opens with a bang with clothing from the designers who inspired Dries and his contemporaries when they were students at the fabled Antwerp Royal Academy in the late seventies and the turn of the early eighties, with stellar pieces from the debut collections of Claude Montana, Thierry Mugler, Gianni Versace, Vivienne Westwood, Jean Paul Gaultier, and others, presented against a dynamic collaged backdrop of eclectic images of the period that include Klaus Nomi, Sex Pistols, and Divine posters, a John Travolta pin-up, and the Diana Vreeland Interview cover. Dries also recently found some soft, hippie spirit dresses and an enduringly chic starburst appliqué coat from his time at the Academy.
