My Weeekly Notebook: Exhibitions

The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk

9 April 2014 - 25 August 2014

Art Gallery
Barbican Centre London

In the first major exhibition devoted to the celebrated French couturier, we invite you to explore Jean Paul Gaultier's fashion world. With his avant-garde fashion creations and cutting-edge designs, Gaultier has shaped the look of fashion over the last 40 years.
Gaultier is fascinated by world cultures and countercultures, conceiving a new kind of fashion in both the way it is made and worn. Through twists, transformations, transgressions and reinterpretations, he not only erases the boundaries between cultures but also the sexes, redefining the idea of androgyny or subverting fashion codes. The infamous conical bra and corsets Madonna wore during her 1990 Blonde Ambition World Tour are showcased alongside stage costumes designed for Kylie Minogue as well as pieces created for the films of Pedro Almodóvar, among others. Gaultier’s rich collaborations with renowned artists and photographers such as Miles Aldridge, David LaChapelle, Pierre et Gilles, Peter Lindbergh, Herb Ritts, Stéphane Sednaoui, Cindy Sherman and Andy Warhol are also shown together with footage of catwalk presentations, concerts, music videos, films and dance performances.

The Glamour of Italian Fashion 1945 - 2014 is a comprehensive look at Italian fashion from the end of the Second World War to the present day. The story is explored through the key individuals and organisations that have contributed to Italy's reputation for quality and style.

This major exhibition is a glamorous, comprehensive look at Italian Fashion from the end of the Second World War to the present day. The story is explored through the key individuals and organisations that have contributed to its reputation for quality and style. It includes both womens and menswear to highlight the exceptional quality of techniques, materials and expertise for which Italy has become renowned.

The exhibition examines Italy's dramatic transition from post-war ruins to the luxury paraded in the landmark ‘Sala Bianca’ catwalk shows held in Florence in the 1950s, which propelled Italian fashion onto the world stage. During the 1950s and '60s the many Hollywood films that were shot on location in Italy had an enormous impact on fashion as stars like Audrey Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor became style ambassadors for Italian fashion, fuelling a keen international appetite for luxurious clothing made in Italy. On display are around 100 ensembles and accessories by leading Italian fashion houses including Simonetta, Pucci, Sorelle Fontana, Valentino, Gucci, Missoni, Giorgio Armani, Dolce & Gabbana, Marni, Fendi, Prada and Versace, through to the next generation of fashion talent.

CHARLOTTE PERRIAND

photographer and designer

From 6th April to 4th May 2014
Galleria Carla Sozzani
Corso Como 10 Milan

Architect, urban planner, designer, collaborator of Le Corbusier, Charlotte Perriand was a pivotal figure in design of the 20th century and influenced contemporary living in multiple ways.

During the 1930s, parallel to her work as a designer, Charlotte Perriand took photographs in her travels throughout Europe, which then became a source of inspiration for her projects, interiors, and fine art works.
The subjects followed each other in a gesture of intuitive choice: she recorded, noted, embossed shapes (and ideas) that captured her attention. And in this way, the metal structure of a bridge, the plot of a fisherman's net, even a stone, became a source of inspiration for the creation of her tables, bookcases and armchairs.

The discovery of hundreds of negatives preserved by the Charlotte Perriand Archives became an opportunity to investigate her photographic work in an extensive and articulated way. This exhibition wishes to bring Perriand’s ouevre to the attention of a wider audience. Perriand's photographs are less known compared to her design work but played a relevant role in the development of her creative process.

A selection of fifty five photographs from the Museum Nicéphore Niépce and the Charlotte Perriand Archives will be presented at the Galleria Carla Sozzani, together with Perriand’s vintage and modern designs, true icons of the 20th century.
